Strong win by honest Gabriel11 Jun 2019

A drop back to an easier grade saw honest campaigner Gabriel record his second win after taking out the $22,500 Fosters Construction over 2100 metres at Te Rapa.

Dropping back to Saturday’s Rating 65 grade, Gabriel shaped up as a better proposition after finishing a creditable third in Open Class company here last month. In between times, the five-year-old ran a brave third in good company at Ellerslie.

The Grant Tucker-trained gelding settled back past midfield wide but with cover improving four wide from the 800m mark to challenge leader Bak Da Master on the turn. Soon after straightening up, Gabriel went clear but had to withstand the late surge from favourite Yatima (J.Riddell) but her late flourish came a fraction too late, with Gabriel winning by a head. Mamba (M.Cameron) was third, two and half lengths back.

Gabriel’s winning time was 2:16.24 (last 600m in 39.65) on a Slow9 track.

Gabriel second win from 30 starts includes seven placings and takes his stakes past $43,000 for owners P G & Mrs S L Tucker.
