Smart ride from Johnson sees Kaipaki Road home30 Sep 2019

Aided by a smart ride by Danielle Johnson, Kaipaki Road went one better at her third try to score her maiden win in the $10,000 Fairview Motors (Maiden) over 1600 metres.

The Stephen Marsh-trained El Roca three-year-old had already shown some promise at her first two outings, both over shorter distances.

Stepping up to a mile for the first time, Kaipaki Road again settled at the rear of the field but rider Danielle Johnson made her move near the 800m mark and was able to find the gaps after cutting the corner to thread her way through the field to take the lead at the 350m mark and the race was all parcelled up to win by one length to Plushenko (D.Mansour) with seven lengths to Drake Bay (V.Colgan) in third.
“I opted to go back on the inside, other-wise I’d lose too much ground going wide and we got out in the straight and it paid off,” Johnson said.
“Her two runs to date have been super, she is a progressing filly and once she gets over more ground, you’ll see more of her,” she added.

Kaipaki Road’s winning time was 1:39.69 (last 600m in 37.64) on a Slow8 track.

“Since her first start, we’ve been waiting to get her to a mile and was pretty confident once she did get there she would be a pretty good show, so rapt for the owners,” Stephen Marsh Racing manager Todd Pollard said.
“Stephen has always liked her since her early trials, so it’s great to see her break maidens.”
“Only concern today that she did get a bit far back, but Danielle rode her perfectly and the gaps opened up and she was too good,” Pollard added.
