Sheer ecstasy for apprentice jockey Shiarna Johnson4 Aug 2019

It was sheer ecstasy for apprentice jockey Shiarna Johnson when she led from start to finish to claim the $35,000 U S Navy Flag Foxbridge Plate 17 Aug (OHcp) over 1200 metres aboard Malambo.

Johnson, atop the Team Rogerson-trained five-year-old daughter of Duelled went straight to the lead from barrier three in the seven horse field and kicked clear at the top of the straight and finish three and a half lengths clear of stablemate Comeback (J.Kam) with a long neck back to Battle Time (C.Burdan) in third place.
“She travelled really well and just got there in the end,” Shiarna Johnson said.
“I felt the opposition come up alongside me, but she kicked.”

Malambo’s winning time was 1:12.61 (last 600m in 36.69) on a Slow9 track.

“That was the ideal plan. With the four kilos off I said to bounce out, be positive and try and lead hard on the fence and give her a nice ride and she pulled it off,” co-trainer Debbie Rogerson said.
“She’s a very handy mare who I think is a lot better this time up and hopefully she can win a Listed race this time in or be Group placed for her breeding prospects down the line.”
“If she comes through this race, we’ll head to the Foxbridge Plate. We’ve got nothing to lose and she races good at Te Rapa and if she happened to run in the first four then I’d be ecstatic.”

Malambo’s recorded her seventh win from 32 starts, four of those victories coming here at Waikato Racing Club’s headquarters and two in Australia with stakes over $245,000.
