Polly Grey too strong18 Aug 2019

Underrated mare Polly Grey stepped up to Rating 82 company with flying colours as she came gunning down her rivals with her customary sweeping run from the top of the straight, taking out the $30,000 Skycity Hamilton (R82) over 1600 metres on Saturday.

The Azamour five-year-old did give a few hints she would not be out of her depth going by her recent runs on her favourite track here at Te Rapa. Trainer Kylie Fawcett decided it was a theory worth proving on more than just paper, and the on-track result more than vindicated her.

From barrier five of the nine horse field, rider Michael Coleman settled the mare closer to the leaders than previous runs, and as the pair turned for home steadily made ground on the pacemakers Tweedledee (T. Yanagida) and No Loitering (E. Leighton) both enjoying considerable claiming advantages but Polly Grey was too strong to win by half a length.

Polly Grey’s winning time was 1:39.63 (last 600m in 37.37) on a slow9 track

“I was really happy to see her a bit handier this time, so it was a great ride by Michael and a good result,” Kylie Fawcett said.
“We’re going to put her out now and give her a bit of a freshen-up as while she is still eating well and has trained on well, she has lightened up a bit.”
“This was her last run as they are not going to race here at Te Rapa on a Saturday for a few months so she can have a break.”
“It was great to get the result. My brother Brook has a share in her and my partner Rob.”
“I was given the horse by Barbara Perry (her breeder) when she died so she is a bit special to us,” Fawcett said.
Polly Grey fourth win from 11 starts includes three placings and takes her stakes to $56,000.
