Norris Ward McKinnon Race Day ft Legacy Lodge Sprint12 Nov 2019

What a wonderful day for two ladies who give so much to the industry that we love.

Joan Egan and her beloved Legacy Lodge sponsored our feature event the Legacy Lodge Sprint on Saturday. Joan’s association with the Waikato Racing Club goes back over 30 years and she describes Te Rapa as her favourite race course having won her first race as an owner breeder here. Joan has recently further pledged her commitment to the Waikato Racing Club as the new sponsor of the Group Two Legacy Lodge Waikato Guineas to be raced on Legends Day in February.

Saturday’s edition was no different with both Ferrando and Media Sensation installed as short favourites for the event. These two horses both jumped best and settled first and second in running. As they straightened they extended their margin out to three lengths before Michael Coleman took his charge to the lead and Media Sensation kicked clear to win by one and three quarter lengths over Ferrando. Last season’s 1000 guineas winner showed that she was in for a great campaign will be targeting sprinting events this season. The Railway in January is firmly in her sights.

The mare by I am Invincible is raced by Barnswood Farm for Sarah Green and GC Beemsterboer and trained by Peter and Dawn Williams. Sarah Green was on course to receive the accolades along with the Legacy Lodge Sprint Trophy. Like Joan Egan, Sarah is a passionate breeder, owner and sponsor. They’re two ladies united with their love of their horses, the joy they bring them and their desire to support this industry that means so much to them.

Although running second in our feature event locally based Team Rogerson trained a double with two year old filly De la Terre winning impressively in our opening event staking her claim towards the Karaka Million. Team Rogerson and owner Te Keeti Bloodstock later book ended the card with the tough win of Mr Universe in the last. Taranaki based trainer Robbie Patterson was also rewarded venturing north with a double on the card with Lady Rudolph and Coventina Bay both ridden by Samantha Collett.

A big thank you to our race day sponsors Norris Ward McKinnon who had naming sponsorship of the race day as well as seven races on the card. Our Hamilton based law firm is a key partner of the Waikato Racing Club and we look forward to hosting them on course again soon.

We now turn our attention to SKYCITY Hamilton Waikato Cup Day on Saturday 14th of December. We’ll see you on track.
