Johnnie Redmond survives protest21 Jul 2019

Johnnie Redmond survived a protest to win the $10,000 Happy 60th Birthday Andy (Maiden) over 1400 metres on Saturday.

Ridden by Darren Danis, the Bachelor Duke three-year-old dug deep over the final stages over his eleven rivals but doubts were raised returning to scale. There was a slight interference with runner-up Kapalka (R.Jones) with his co-trainer Graeme Rogerson lodging an appeal, claiming the winner had bumped his runner on two occasions.

With a winning margin of a short neck between Johnnie Redmond and Kapalka, the protest could have gone either way, but after a 20-minute deliberation, the Stewards overruled the objection and co-trainer Lance O’Sullivan and rider Darren Danis were relieved men.
“He still has a lot to learn but he’s improved heaps since his last run,” Darren Danis said.
“Thanks to the Wexford Stables team, they work hard for it,” he added.

Johnnie Redmond’s winning time was 1:27.97 (last 600m in 39.02) on a Heavy10 track.

“I’m delighted for the owners. They have been really patient with the horse,” co-trainer Lance O’Sullivan said.
“Mark Donoghue has been riding him at work, and has done a terrific job, and it has paid off today.”
“He’s done a lot wrong. He’s certainly a horse that will improve with time,” O’Sullivan said.
