Italian Lover brushes competition away11 Jun 2019

Central Districts visitor Italian Lover continued her rich rein of form when winning the $30,000 Become A Waikato Racing Club Member (Rating 82) over 2200 metres on Saturday.


Apprentice rider Madan Singh utilized barrier two to full advantage, settling the daughter of Zed handy to the leaders for majority of the race until sneaking up on the inside to take the lead before the turn. Race favourite Cossack Warrior looked to threaten and tried in vain but the 5.5kgs weight difference was too much with Italian Lover running out a length victor. Elle Eye Are (M.Coleman) was three lengths back in third.

Italian Lover’s winning time was 2:23.62 (last 600 in 38.04) on a Slow9 track.


“She has really progressed well this season,” trainer Fraser Auret said.

“She won her maiden race towards the start of the season and although she has had a couple of mini breaks, to be winning a rating 82 race the same season as you started is a great testament to her attitude.”

“She has come a long way, it is very exciting.”

“I think these deep winter tracks would get the better of her, so with that in-mind she went out to the spelling paddock this morning to have a month’s reprieve,” he said.

“I’d love to try her at two miles at a nice weight. She will have her winter reprieve now and we will assess how she comes up in the spring.”

Italian Lover’s four wins from 10 starts includes three seconds and takes her stakes over $57,000 for owner G D Shannon.
