Helena Baby makes it four in a row8 Jul 2019

A rise in class did little to stop promising galloper Helena Baby from taking his winning streak to four wins in a row on Saturday, with another impressive victory taking out the $30,000 HAPPY BIRTHDAY JOHN SOUTHWORTH (Rating 82) over 1400 metres.

Starting hot favourite, the speedy four-year-old son of Guillotine sat outside leader Grand Rio until rider Donavan Mansour let off the breaks before turning for home and the race looked all stitched up as Helena Baby kept up a relentless gallop to the line, especially with Mars Bar (D.Danis) chasing hard but Helena Baby had plenty in reserve recording a one length victory. Imblaze (M.Coleman) was a length back in third.
“He’s a special horse,” Donavan Mansour said.
“He’s getting better and maturing but he’s very green. He could have won today by six or seven lengths but he picks up the winning post and digs in his toes and hangs a bit but when the class of opposition are better and horses closer in the finish, will help him concentrate,” he added.

Helena Baby’s winning time was 1:25.66 (last 600m in 36.47) on a Heavy10 track.

“He’s absolute class horse,” in-form trainer John Bell said.
“I’ve been asked how he compares to Mosse and Julius, and I think he’s better.”
“He was travelling sweetly throughout, and I felt quite comfortable.”
“We are heading to the Opunake Cup now, then he’s headed to Hong Kong unfortunately.”
“Being by Guillotine, he’s had time, I’ve always said that give them time, they will produce.”
The win was Helena’s Baby fourth win (in a row) from six starts after two seconds in his first two starts, takes his stakes close to $60,000. - Mark Nowell
