Double delight for Patterson and Collett12 Nov 2019

Jockey Sam Collett and CD trainer Robbie Patterson enjoyed a good day at the office on Saturday when they combined to take home a late race-to-race double at Te Rapa.

The pair paid their first visit to the winner’s circle with favourite Lady Rudolph ($5.30) - in Race 6, the $22,500 Norris Ward McKinnon Private Client Law (R65) over 1400 metres before doubling the dose straight after with $4 favourite Coventina Bay taking out the $25,000 Norris Ward McKinnon Employment Law (R72) over 1400 metres.

Both winners bore Collett’s trademark vigorous riding, especially aboard Coventina Bay who needed a bit of that extra coaxing to get through the gaps and to get the better of a very resilient Tia Celeste (L.Satherley) by a short neck. The winning margin for Lady Rudolph a little wider – three quarters of a length – but Collett’s horsemanship still had a place in the equation.
“I think both are true black-types mares,” trainer Robbie Patterson said.
“That was an incredible effort for Coventina Bay to overcome all that and win,”
“I can’t split them, so going forward It’s great.”
“There is a Group Two here in the middle of December, that’s why I came here today. To test them both on the track. So it’s onwards and upwards.”
“A couple great rides by Sam Collett. She’s such a confident person, she gets on them, she’s happy, never a dull moment but she’s lucky she’s on good motors though,” Patterson said.
