Calder bags a treble8 Sep 2019

Jockey Andrew Calder made it a treble after Soaring Wyvern easily captured the $10,000 Amber Garden Centre (Rating 65) over 1400 metres on Friday.

Calder made it three winners by the fifth race on the card after posting wins with Mianjo and My Superior Girl.
The last of the three, Soaring Wyvern bounced back to the winner’s circle when he breezed past his competition to post a decisive length and three quarters margin over favourite Zamax (O. Bosson) with a short neck to Benaud (S. Johnson) in third.

Soaring Wyvern’s winning time was 1:27.03 (last 600m in 37.70) on a Heavy10 track.

Trainer Todd Mitchell quipped the pressure was on after part-owner Catherine Cameron won the race beforehand with My Superior Girl.
“There’s always pressure when Catherine gets a winner,” he said.
“After he won here we took him to Ruakaka and we don’t think he handled it right-handed, he wasn’t the same horse.”
“He’s been working with My Superior Girl and both have been working nicely.”
“We were going to go to Hastings but we may have too many points now so we may have to change our plans.”
“He’s had a few problems, like a wind operation but when Andrew rides him like that with every opportunity he’s a progressive type.”
“I'd like to thank Andrew and the staff at home. We can’t do it without the staff,” Mitchell said.
Soaring Wyvern second win was on his 18th start for owners Miss C J Cameron, S Giles & T W Mitchell.
