Birdsong makes winning debut11 Jun 2019

Well regarded Birdsong made a winning debut in the $22,500 Skycity Hamilton (2YO) over 1200 at Te Rapa on Saturday.

The two-year-old daughter of Snitzel sped to the lead from barrier three and never looked in doubt being troubled, holding a two and a quarter lengths advantage over Roc Cha (R.Elliot) with a length back to Harlech (C.Lammas) finishing well for third.

“It’s good to get these two-year-old’s out and in the clear. It might not be the way to ride her but you get away with it first-up,” Matt Cameron said.

Birdsong’s winning time was 1:13.13 (last 600m in 36.92) on a Slow9 track.

“It was always the key, whoever got up on pace and she was the one who drew the best,” winning co-trainer Andrew Forsman said.

“She has really improved since the trials and we have put the blinkers on since those trials and she has really sharpened up.

“She is a beautiful filly, well bred, and she is only going to get better with time,” Forsman added.

Sir Peter Vela’s Pencarrow Thoroughbreds, bred Birdsong from the Group Three winning Galileo mare Scintillula who was a runner-up at Group One level while also placing fourth in both the Group One Yorkshire Oaks (2385m) and Group One Irish Oaks (2414m).

Birdsong was purchased by Sunlight Thoroughbreds for $400,000 from the Pencarrow Stud draft at the 2018 National Yearling Sale.
